Sisters of Mercy present at TCC opening
The Sisters of Mercy were special guests of The Cathedral College’s Blessing and Opening of the Centre of Teaching and Learning Excellence incorporating their new library in Rockhampton recently.
Staff member Sister Margaret Dixon was joined by Sr Bev Whitton (Community Leader, Community North ISMAPNG)) Sr Joanne Molloy and Sr Desma Clarke at the blessing and opening which was conducted by Bishop Michael McCarthy.
The Cathedral College has strong links with the Sisters of Mercy in Rockhampton and draws on the charisms of the Sisters of Mercy Founder Venerable Catherine McAuley and the Christian Brothers Founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. The College is built on the site of the old St Joseph’s Christian Brothers College (CBC) which closed in 1990, with The Cathedral College Day Campus opening on the site in 1991. The Cathedral College Girls’ Residential is situated on the site of the Range College operated by the Sisters of Mercy with the Boy’s Residential adjacent to the Day Campus.
Featured in the new centre are stained-glass windows retrieved from the Chapel of the Christians Brothers’ Residence and installed in the new library as a visible link to the past and history of the College.
College Principal, Mr Rob Alexander, said that the new facilities bring a further dimension to the quality teaching and learning that is offered by The Cathedral College. The new facilities provide an additional support and scope for student learning thereby enabling The Cathedral College to continue to provide students with the opportunity to develop academically during the time they spend at the College.
“This library is at the centre of our College and is a focus of learning, knowledge, wisdom and virtue, and builds on the inspired legacy of those who laid the foundations for future generations,” Principal Mr Alexander said.
Mr Alexander said that the College Community was very grateful for the support of all involved in this recent project and trusts that both staff and students will embrace all that the new facilities offer.
