Book collection gifted to mark Book Week 2019

Every Catholic school and college in the Diocese of Rockhampton is set to receive a collection of books in the coming weeks to mark the 2019 Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week.

The collection is a gift from Rockhampton Catholic Education Director Leesa Jeffcoat celebrating the 2019 Book Week theme, Reading is my secret power, and spotlighting the positive impact literature can have for every child’s learning.

“Book Week is a much-loved part of the annual school calendar. I have great pleasure in gifting these books to each school and I hope they bring enjoyment to countless numbers of students for years to come,” Miss Jeffcoat said.

The chosen books are a selection of entertaining and inspiring texts highlighted and recommended by noted teacher-librarian and author Megan Daley in her book Raising Readers: how to nurture a child’s love of books.

“As someone who loves to read, I know how powerful literature, stories and well-written texts can be for children and young adults,” Miss Jeffcoat said.

“My advice to young people is to aspire to be a good reader, it will serve you well, whatever your endeavour. You extend your horizons every time you pick up a new book.” Miss Jeffcoat said.

A total of 900 books will be delivered to libraries in 31 primary schools and 8 secondary colleges across the diocese.
